For a short version of her character, she is essentially a Gabite in human form.

All jokes aside, her bold nature is a natural feature, driving her to actions that many would naturally shy away from. A lot of it is from her also-natural naïveté of danger and what should be avoided. Very few things she actually considers worthy of her fear, but rarely will show them. Anger is a natural go-to in such cases, another feature of her boldness. Taking on things that are bigger than her is a task that she won’t back down from and will do her best to accomplish.

Technological equipment is something that she is far from ignorant with. What she lacks with human interaction, she makes up for in the mechanical. Her drive for learning and inquisitive habits led her to learning about many progresses in technology, even what would be considered taboo. Anyone who has the gall to become a flux-chemist and those that put their lives on the line for the sake of science have her utmost respect.

Despite her love for science, she thrives in the field of a Scholar. Her area of studies is always expanding, from languages to natures to even the stars above. Her nose is often caught up in some sort of literature or book, and when not reading avidly, she is instead working on her next possible invention. A workaholic life leads little pleasure time. Not that she minds—she does everything by choice, never wanting to feel controlled or obey another’s orders.

The Archivist had been a role model for her since reaching Lanorae. The myths and legends, surrounding the being known as the one to know all, pull at her heart and mind with an unstable yearning for answers. Often will she be hunched over her Codex, awaiting the next update with profound amounts of attention. One day, it is her dream to have the real Codex in her hands for her to peruse. But, perhaps in another life.

A downside to her great drive and fiesty personality is her oblivious nature. It doesn’t help that she isn’t in-tune with most of society in terms of moral standing, by far. A dirty joke could go far over her head; a phrase meant as an insult could be taken as a compliment. Gullible tendencies fall in line, capable of being coerced into even the most simple of cons so long as things made sense to her. That isn’t to say she’ll fall for any old con—it has to be good. Not too good—even the sweetest scent can have a foul odor underneath. Just right.

Romance has no part in her life. Everything is either about business, or the land of adventure. Love and filly-fally-feels lead nothing for her in her mind. That isn’t to say she’s entirely against the subject—work just comes first in her life. At least, for now. Inventions and ideas just come at such a steady pace for her that there never feels like a need for a break for the mundane life of a lover.

Her cousin Uriel is most likely the second family member alive that she holds any real connection to outside of her grandfather. Close in age, they find that through their differences, they find connections. His hyper, carefree, sly nature falls perfectly with her stubborn, aggressive, inexperienced one. She is more open in holding a familial love towards him than with her grandfather if only because of the fact her younger cousin isn’t as wise nor tolerant.

Another creature that she shows a touch of familial love with is her Gabite, Gia. The biggest mother figure in her life after her mother’s disappearance, the Gabite willingly took her in after the slaughter of her kin. Seeing the girl as an unstable child, she took on the role of guardian and led the girl away from the trail of rage, back on track and to Vali’s grandfather, in time. In private when not fully aware of it, Vali may let slip calling the Gabite “mom,” “mother,” or any variation of the word. One would do best not to point that out should it happen, lest they face her infallible rage.

/*----HISTORY----*/

--when everything was normal

Born to Adin Owen Jr. and Cathandra Guenivieve as Crystal Valissa Owen, Valissa had a bright start in the otherwise-desolate landscape of Orre. From a baby, she had a full head of hair and bright eyes. She took after her mother primarily in terms of looks, but her eyes shone like her father’s. She didn’t cry upon birth, which frightened the doctor’s. Instead, she laughed.

Brought home to the ranch held near Agate Village, lush green meadows would be the first memory for the infant. Her first encounter with Pokémon also took place soon after her arrival home. A Swablu flew onto her head, warming the fragile babe and humming a soothing song to lull her to sleep. The Flying type was owned by her father, who watched Vali most of the time considering Cathandra was often busy at the temple she attended as a priestess.

Her life was filled with adventure from the moment she learned how to move. Always eager to mimic her parents be it in terms of body movements or speech, the child wanted to act like an adult before she even reached five years of age. The primary parent was her father, with whom she spent most of her time with. Respect and love blossomed and influenced much of the girl’s life concerning Adin. Mimicking his movements, she was his mirror, including working with Pokémon. The family ranch became like her second home, much preferring that environment than the cold weightiness of the temple. Cathandra never minded, in fact relishing in the connection her daughter and husband shared.

The biggest fault of young Vali was her energy and will for adventure. Her carelessness for danger showed even then, frightening her father to the point of never wanting to leave the lass alone for even a second. As she grew older, her reckless and energetic nature didn’t cease, rather increasing with each passing year. Her Swablu friend managed to calm her down with soothing music should things grow too dangerous, but even that didn’t always save her.

Nearing six years of age, Vali came down with a sickness that lasted for years. Its symptoms ranged, from first being like a common cold to extending to severe flu-like symptoms. Her parents couldn’t figure it out nor could properly treat her as Cathandra was very against means of modern medicinal practices, preferring to stick to the traditional ways her father had shown her. Needless to say, the traditional methods weren’t the most effective even after years worth of treatment.

Nearing her ninth year of age, her parents were afraid that Vali wouldn’t be able to take on the Pokémon journey almost all kids did at the age of ten due to her health issues. Thankfully, within a few months time, the fatigue and nausea were the last things to leave the girl’s body, all the energy and liveliness returning in full force.

It was also around this time that Adin had to give away the Swablu that had stuck near her bedside for so long. It pained the girl—they had been together for nearly her entire life. To take away such an important being was more than devastating, and left her in an angry state towards her parents, her father especially. The one she had trusted most decided to go and do such a thing? What a travesty!

--when everything began

Her boredom at home would be cut short on her tenth birthday, when her father granted her the start of her Pokémon journey—with permission from the Region’s professor, of course. Her eyes lit up in wonder. Would it be the Swablu friend she lost so long ago? So long as it wasn’t a Skarmory, she was fine with it. She still smarted from her last run-in with the cursed creatures.

Hands reached for the packaged creature held tight in a Pokeball. Her very first time holding one! The Pokémon on the ranch were never held in such contraptions, free to roam wherever they felt like. Fingers crossed to be reunited with her long-lost friend, she pressed the button and released…

    …a fluffball of an Eevee.

The ‘vee was a serious creature and wouldn’t sit on Vali’s head to calm her down or hum sweet songs. She would mostly bat at her own ears, feeling uncomfortable in the heat of Orre, and shake her fur of the sand and dust, sending it Vali’s way most of the time.

It would have to be a few weeks later that Vali could finally decide on a name: Jordin. She had taken a list of all the possible names she would’ve granted her Swablu should she have received that instead, but after much consideration, she came to terms with the Eevee at her side.

Her bond with Jordin was steadily growing stronger with each passing day. After finding out the little fox was happy around her shoulders, it ended up being her near-permanent placement instead of the stupid Pokeball. She even kept the shirt that had been damaged by her claws, if mostly so Jordin wouldn’t tear into a brand new one. During their time together, there was one thing that brought them incredibly close, and that was their aggression and love for battle.

Her 11th birthday arrived with one hell of a present: a Charmander, her very own and second Pokémon. There was something odd about the Charmander, and it was more than her vibrant red eyes and the pink ribbon around her neck. It was the golden coloration of her scales, much brighter than the usual orange palette of the typical fire lizard. The party felt more like a celebration for her father rather than the daughter, with how proud he was of the Charmander’s existence. “Much blood and many tears and gallons of sweat” were apparently what the little creature was made out of, according to Adin.

Taking the presence of a new Pokémon much better than her first moments with Jordin, Vali immediately named the little Lizard Pokémon “Cherry” due to her bright red eyes. Cherry was shy, incredibly so, but her tail lit to near white-hot levels, surprising both of her parents—not in a good way. The room heated up extremely, the candles on the cake flaring up with it, nearly melting the candles completely.

--when everything was ruined

A little past her twelfth birthday, Vali was home with her father whilst her mother was at work at the temple. Not an hour had gone by, yet Adin had worry for his wife considering it had already passed the time she was scheduled to come home. Sure, late hours could occur, but it wasn’t like her to send not even a warning before having left that that night may have been a long one. In fact, she said it should’ve been early for her to get out.

A knock on the door, her father answered in record time. What he was met with was far from his wife.

A loud noise reverberated through the house, signaling Vali’s attention. Had her mother slammed the door or something in a huff, or her father too eagerly? Any questions were ground to halt once her eyes found her father, lying on the floor in a growing pool of red.

Her first instinct was to run. Hide. Anything. What was in front of her was not good. The people entering the house weren’t kind. They weren’t there to help.

By the time other people found the scene, she had already kept herself hidden away, far from where others could find her. Life left her father’s body, just like the red draining from his body.

Out of fear, she knew she couldn’t return home. After a while, by the time she was coming to her senses and wanted to return home, the way home was lost, just as she was. With no other choice, she had to board a ship. Maybe that would take her far from there. She didn’t want to be with anyone else, maybe find her mom. That might lead her somewhere, anywhere but there. Rationality was gone. Just like her father.

--when everything returned

Law enforcement in Sinnoh had found Vali a few months after her disappearance and her father’s murder. She had taken on a rugged appearance, with wild hair, a thin frame, and ratty apparel. Dirt cloaked her body, as well as specks of blood and wounds here or there. They were minor scratches, bruises, nothing too severe on the outside. Her lack of speech was a tad worrying, but other than that, she seemed generally fine. To the enforcement, anyway. It was difficult to get near her at times to understand more about her, as her newly found compatriot—a Gabite by the name of Gia—kept close watch over the girl as if she was protecting her own young.

After word of her being found reached the other regions, Orre claimed her to be the missing child from the various news reports that had circulated the radio and papers. Her mother’s father had volunteered in taking in the girl after hearing word of the tragedy befalling her parents. His failing mind didn’t stop him from wanting to be some sort of a guardian to the girl, but he had recently moved to some far-off region called…Lanorae? What an odd-sounding region to the girl. She only knew a couple regions by name, but Lanorae had never hit her ears.

Upon arriving at her grandfather’s doorstep, she couldn’t help but feel more like some weight to be delivered as a package. Lanorae looked amazing compared to Orre, livelier and far from desolate, but she felt out-of-place, and anger flared in her small body at the realization. Her grandfather, named Reyleigh, welcomed her with open arms. He was a Spiritualist, and a talented one, at that. It had been a family profession, one his dearly-departed wife and even Cathandra had taken a role in. For the first couple months, he tried to train Vali in the field, but it was quick to be seen that she had no desire to speak with him on anything.

Their initial greeting granting the cold shoulder from the girl, she took to exploring the house than spending time getting to know her grandfather. Whether he tried telling her about her father’s side of the family or the culture of Lanorae, the only subject that seemed to spark any interest from her was Pokémon.

Reyleigh’s Pokémon were primarily Ghost types. His Spiritomb and Froslass were just as stoic as her grandfather, not to mention creepy. His Gastly, on the other hand, was incredibly warm, and tried to make Vali smile at all instances. He would goof around, rolling from side to side in the air in his little ball-shape, and even making weird faces with what images he could materialize as. It amused the girl greatly, and warmed her heart to see a playful Pokémon much like the ones she used to play with on her father’s ranch.

The Gastly helped warm her to her grandfather, but things would be difficult with the old man. His mind was still going even as his brilliance showed, and his mood swings would show it. It reached a point where Vali questioned if he even understood where he was at times, or was stuck in some scene in the past.

Time between the two relatives warmed over the span of a few years, to where Vali now sees herself as more a family member than a burden. Lanorae has become more of a home than some far-off land that she has no right to be in. Fitting more into society has grown easier over the years, but at times, she’ll slip into her old habits. …Mostly only when angry, though.

ARTIST COMMENTS:

Ahhh, finally done! ;u; This took so long for me. Kinda sad that the limit for the artist comment held me back a bit, but oh, well. I'm so sorry if it sounds a bit weird in the personality and history--I had to severely cut down thanks to the limit. ;^;
